[Sprog: Engelsk].
Dear Member Societies,
At the WFSA, we have welcomed the arrival of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere by attending various congresses, where we had the opportunity to connect with many of you and hear from you directly. We greatly value the chance to meet in person with our Member Societies. As always, below you will find a summary of this month’s key highlights.
[You will receive this in your language of choice: English, French or Spanish. Please help us by cascading this information to your members.]

30 June extraordinary WFSA General Assembly

Thank you to all those who took part in the 30 June extraordinary WFSA General Assembly. 62 Member Societies participated, either through pre-voting or attendance at the live meeting. Members approved WFSA’s 2023 accounts, the 2024 budget and a WFSA position statement on the safety of the anaesthesia workforce in regions of conflict. Read the 30 June General Assembly minutes and find copies of the translated WFSA Position Statement.

WFSA Fellowships

WFSA has a long history of delivering high-quality sub-specialty Fellowships in locations around the world. We are delighted to share the first of three publications supported by a grant from the Anaesthesia Patient Safety Foundation Grant (APSF) which looks at the impact of our Fellowship programmes. The article is now available in our Virtual Library.
We are also pleased to share that since August, we have had 10 WFSA Fellows begin their training. Our Pain Management programme in Bangkok welcomed Dr Heng Bonavin and Dr Phan Trong Nhan, from Cambodia and Vietnam respectively, to begin their year-long training on 1 Augus.t At the start of this month, the Paediatric Anaesthesia Training in Africa (PATA) programme entered its third year. PATA Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia welcomed seven Fellows between them, all of whom will attend a bootcamp in Lusaka at the start of October. Finally, Dr Taresa Dechasa Fite from Ethiopia travelled to New Delhi to begin his 9-month training in Thoracic Anaesthesia.

World Patient Safety Day

This is a global WHO Day, celebrated each year on 17 September. The theme for 2024 was ‘Improving diagnosis for patient safety’ and we were delighted to support the celebrations with a webinar highlighting how accurate and timely diagnosis of perioperative anaemia, as part of patient blood management programmes, can improve patient outcomes and ensure the safety and quality of care provided. We were honoured to have some of the global experts in this field join us for this, as well as Dr Irina Papieva, Head A.I. for WHO Patient Safety Flagship You can view the recording on our YouTube channel here.

Perioperative Patient Blood Management

We now have a landing page for Perioperative Patient Blood Management (P-PBM) information on our website, including details of our activities in this area and key resources from other organisations, such as the NATA Newsletter archives.

Halothane crisis

WFSA continues to engage with relevant colleagues around the non-availability of halothane. In August we convened a stakeholder call with over 80 attendees to discuss ways to raise awareness of this critical issue and help circumvent the impact it will have. We have also written a letter to the editor of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia highlighting this. You can access this on the halothane page on our website here.

Conferences

9th All Africa Anaesthesia Congress (AAAC)
WFSA had a strong presence at the AAAC in Johannesburg earlier this month, including from our President and several Past Presidents. We are grateful to the South African Society for generously hosting the congress which was a sold-out success and organised in collaboration with our African Regional Section (ARS). The 9th AAAC was also the site of the 2024 Regional Assembly which elected a new ARS Board. We congratulate the new ARS President and his team, and wish them all the best for their term. You can find details of the new Board on our website here.
SFAR Congress 2024
We were excited to have a stand at the French Society of Anaesthesiology Congress in Paris earlier this month. Alongside colleagues from the Moroccan Society of Anaesthesiologists, co-hosts of WCA2026, it was great to meet French anaesthesiologists and other French-speaking doctors who came to Paris for the occasion.
Association of Anaesthetists (Great Britain & Ireland)
Last week we were in Harrogate attending the annual congress of the Association of Anaesthetists in the UK. It was wonderful to meet old friends and make new connections; and great to see the excitement for WCA2026 already building.
Please check out our LinkedIn, Instagram and X pages for photos and updates from all the events we have participated in recently.

Capnography

WFSA is proud to be working with Lifebox and Smile Train on a global effort to raise awareness of the need for capnography monitoring. You can find more information about this initiative on our website here, along with a template letter of support which we are urging Member Societies to sign.
